The Cannabis Art of Wayne Phillips
My
intent is twofold. First, to artistically draw attention to the fact
that cannabis, as a "herb bearing seed", is a gift from God and, more importantly, that
God does in fact have a purpose for cannabis in mind; that being, that "herb bearing seed" was meant " for the service of man" as stated in Gen. 1:29 &
Psalms 104:14 of the King James Bible. Second, Cannabis Art is art meant to
protest and challenge the inclusion of cannabis in the CDSA as is.
Ultimately, Cannabis Art is an artistic celebration of the sacredness of cannabis.
The first publicity Cannabis Art garnered came from the Hamilton Spectator on September 5, 2002 in a full page story entitled, "Marijuana use is a political hot potato". The next was a 9 month exhibition at the Up In Smoke Cafe in Hamilton, Ontario. Future exhibits as of Aug. 29, 2005 are pending.

Genesis 1:11 "And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so."
Genesis 1:12 "And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good."
Genesis 1:13 "And the evening and the morning were the third day."
Genesis 1:29 "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."
Genesis 9:3 "Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things."

The Making of Cannabis Art
NOTE: Although
any can make cannabis art, my doing so is in the capacity of a practising artist exploring the boundries of protest art.
What is Cannabis Art?
Cannabis
Art is a polymer emulsion decoupage technique incorporating pressed
cannabis leaves with variously painted or "*print" backgrounds (as
surfaces) which have first been mounted on untempered masonite board or
pressboard and (optional) polymer image transfers.
This technique is most suited for the abovementioned surfaces but works equally well on stretched or unstretched hemp or cotton canvas. It is not suitable for clothing attire.
I prefer artist quality polymer emulsions - acrylics - because of their permanence and quick drying properties.

How is Cannabis Art made?
Initially,
I figure out which leaves I want to go where, then apply a drop of
polymer medium to the backside of the leaf and gently re-position it. I
repeat this process until the design aspects are met then I
apply the first 5 coats with an airbrush ( an atomizer will work in a
pinch but is tedious). Once thoroughly dry subsequent coats are then
applied with a brush.
Each piece has between 15-25 coats of either polymer matte medium or polymer gloss medium and at least 2 coats of either matte or gloss polymer varnish depending upon the overall qualities of the piece.
I leave each piece approximately 72 hours before framing (if necessary.

neither bear the shame of the heathen any more."
